Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do some robots remember where they have been?
The Big Idea
Some robots remember where they have been by keeping a record of their path or a map of what they have seen! That helps them avoid going over the same ground again. It also helps them find the way back.
Keep a Record
Step one: keep a record. A robot can save a list of its moves, or draw a map of what it has seen. The computer stores this in its memory.
Skip Repeats
Step two: skip repeats. With a record, the robot knows which places it has already visited. So it does not waste time going over the same ground again.
Find the Way Back
Step three: find the way back. The record also shows the path home, and where interesting things were. A Mars rover keeps track so it can go back to a rock.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! One kind of memory is a trail of moves. Another kind is a map of places seen. The robot can mark a special rock on it. And later, it can use the map to get home.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Remembering helps save time and battery. Robot vacuums remember which parts of the floor are already clean. Computer memory stores information as numbers. Walk slowly in a clear room, and hold a grown-up's hand if you want.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Walk through a room, leaving a trail of sticky notes on the floor. Then retrace your path slowly, with a grown-up beside you. Look for each note, or close your eyes and feel for them. Why would a robot like a trail to follow?
