How Do Underwater Robots Take Pictures in the Dark Deep?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How do underwater robots take pictures in the dark deep?

The Big Idea

Underwater robots take pictures in the dark deep by bringing their own bright lights! Sunlight does not reach the deep ocean. Robots also use sound to sense the seafloor.

No Sunlight

Step one: no sunlight. Sunlight fades away as you go deeper, and the deep ocean is completely dark. So a robot cannot count on any light from above, and must bring its own.

Lights and Camera

Step two: lights and cameras. An underwater robot carries bright lights and strong cameras. The lights shine on fish, rocks, and the seafloor, and the cameras take pictures.

Listen with Sound

Step three: listen with sound. Some robots use sonar, which sends out sound and listens for echoes. The echoes help build a picture of the seafloor, even in total darkness.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Down deep, the water is dark. The robot switches on its lights. Its camera captures what the lights show. Sonar echoes fill in the shape of the seafloor. Lights, camera, and sonar make a great team.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Robots can stay down much longer than people can. They can go much deeper than people can. Canadian ocean scientists use robots on cables to explore the deep Pacific. Practice in a dim room that a grown-up has cleared first.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! In a dim, cleared room, find a toy by touch alone. Then find it again with a flashlight. What does a deep-sea robot need that you needed? Draw a robot with lights!
