Why Does a Rover Only Drive a Little Bit at a Time?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does a rover only drive a little bit at a time?

The Big Idea

A rover drives only a little bit at a time because messages from Earth take minutes to arrive! So engineers can't steer it live, like a toy car. Instead, they send a plan and the rover carries it out slowly and carefully.

Slow Messages

Step one: slow messages. Radio signals travel at the speed of light, but Mars is very far away. A message can take from about 5 to 20 minutes to get there, depending on where the planets are.

Send a Plan

Step two: send a plan. Because steering live is impossible, engineers send a day of instructions at once. The rover then carries them out on its own.

Check for Hazards

Step three: check for hazards. As it drives, the rover checks its sensors for rocks, slopes, and soft sand. Careful, slow driving keeps it safe, and then it waits for the next plan.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Engineers write a plan each day. The rover drives a short way. It watches for hazards the whole time. Then it sends news and pictures back to Earth.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! The rover waits for new plans each day. Engineers practice driving with test rovers here on Earth. A rover can tell when a slope is too steep and stop on its own. When you play the game, clear the room and go slowly.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Write ten steps to guide a friend, who has closed eyes, across a cleared room. Give the whole list at once, and they cannot ask questions. What goes wrong? Where would you add safety checks?
