Why Does a Drone Tilt to Fly Forward?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does a drone tilt to fly forward?

The Big Idea

A drone tilts to fly forward because a tilt turns its up-and-down push into a forward push! The rotors push air backward as well as down. Pushing air back moves the drone forward.

Nose Down

Step one: nose down. To fly forward, the drone speeds up its back rotors and slows its front ones. That tips the nose of the drone down.

Push Backward

Step two: push the air backward. Now the rotors point a little backward, so they push air backward as well as down. The air pushes back on the drone, and it moves forward.

Tilt More, Go Faster

Step three: tilt more, go faster. The more the drone tilts, the faster it goes. To stop, it tilts the other way.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! A level drone just hovers in place. When the nose tips down, the rotors lean too. They push air backward as well as down. And that sends the drone forward.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! A tilt turns up-and-down force into forward motion. Part of the push still holds the drone up, so it keeps flying. Drones can tilt left, right, forward, or back to go anywhere. When you try this, aim the straw at a paper boat, not at anyone's face.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Put a small paper boat or a feather on a table. Blow through a straw straight down on it, then blow from a slant. When does it slide? How is that like a tilted drone?
