Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How do robots scrub the bottoms of big ships?

The Big Idea

Robots scrub ship bottoms to remove tiny sea animals like barnacles! A clean hull glides through the water more smoothly. That saves fuel and protects the sea.

Stuck-On Growth

Step one: the problem. Tiny sea animals like barnacles stick to the bottom of a ship. That makes the hull rough, so the ship moves less smoothly and uses more fuel.

Stick and Crawl

Step two: crawl the hull. A robot crawls along the ship's hull, held on by magnets or suction. It works underwater, without a diver needed.

Scrub Clean

Step three: clean. Brushes or water jets scrub away the growth. A smooth hull saves fuel and protects the sea from unwanted passengers.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Barnacles are tiny animals that glue themselves on. Magnets or suction hold the robot to the hull. Brushes or water jets scrub them away. The ship slides through the water more easily. Cleaner hulls also reduce pollution.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Some ships are nearly 400 meters long, longer than 3 football fields. Fuel savings can be a lot over a year of sailing. Ships can carry sea animals to new places, which can harm nature. Never swim near a ship, and stay safely back from docks.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Drag a smooth plastic lid through a tub of water. Then stick bits of clay to the bottom of the lid, and drag it again. Which feels harder to move? Why does a clean hull help a ship?

Outro

Hull-cleaning robots help ships glide, save fuel, and protect the sea. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
