Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How do robots sort recycling?

The Big Idea

Robots sort recycling by looking at each item as it rides past on a conveyor belt! Cameras and sensors tell the items apart. A robot arm or a puff of air puts each one in the right bin.

Ride the Belt

Step one: ride the belt. At a recycling center, items travel along a conveyor belt past cameras and sensors. Everything moves in a single line.

Read the Item

Step two: identify. Cameras see shape and color, and some sensors use invisible light to tell plastics apart. A computer decides what each item is.

Into the Bin

Step three: sort. When the computer finds an item it should sort, a robot arm or a puff of air moves it into the right bin. Robots can sort quickly and keep working all day.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! The camera spots each item's shape and color. Invisible light shows which kind of plastic it is. A quick air puff or a robot arm flicks it aside. It lands in the right bin. Clean, dry recycling is easier for machines to sort.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Sorting robots can pick dozens of items every minute. Steel cans can be pulled out with magnets. Food and liquids can spoil other recycling. Wear gloves, and ask a grown-up to help with recycling.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, sort some clean recycling into groups by material, following your local rules. Which items were tricky to tell apart? What sensor would help a robot decide? Thank you for helping the planet!

Outro

Cameras and sensors help robots sort recycling fast. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
