Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does a motor spin when you connect a battery?

The Big Idea

A motor spins because electricity can turn a coil of wire into a magnet! Other magnets nearby push and pull on it, and that makes the coil turn. Almost every robot uses electric motors to move.

Wire Magnet

Step one: make a magnet. Inside a small motor, electricity flows through a coil of wire and turns it into a magnet. When the battery stops, the magnet switches off!

Push and Pull

Step two: push and pull. Magnets pull on each other in some positions and push apart in others. The magnets around the coil push and pull it, which twists the coil around.

Smart Switch

Step three: keep it going. A clever switch flips the electricity at just the right moment. That keeps the pushes going the same way, so the motor spins around and around.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! The battery sends electricity into the wires. Magnets sit around the coil. The coil spins, and a shaft carries the turning outside. The shaft turns a wheel or an arm, and the robot moves! Every motor is a team of electricity and magnets.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Some motors are as tiny as a pea. Others are bigger than a car. More electricity usually means faster spinning. Only try motor projects with a grown-up, and never touch wires across a battery.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Hold two fridge magnets near each other. Feel them push apart, and pull together. A motor uses this same push and pull, with timing that never stops. Leave batteries and wires to a grown-up.

Outro

A motor spins because magnets push and pull with perfect timing. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
