Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why doesn't a robot vacuum fall down the stairs?
The Big Idea
A robot vacuum does not fall down the stairs because it has cliff sensors! They shine infrared light at the floor and check for the light that bounces back. At a stair edge, almost no light returns, so the robot knows to stop.
Look Down
Step one: look down. A robot vacuum has cliff sensors under its front edge. They constantly point down at the floor, so the robot always knows how far away it is. Four or more of them guard the front.
Light Bounces
Step two: light bounces. Each sensor shines invisible infrared light at the floor and checks what bounces back. On flat floor, a strong bounce comes back every time, like a steady heartbeat.
Sudden Drop
Step three: a sudden drop. At a stair edge, the floor is suddenly far away, so little light returns. The robot's brain sees the change and stops or turns back.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! The sensor sends out infrared light. Floor sends back a strong bounce. A stair edge sends back almost none. Dark carpets can sometimes trick cliff sensors, because they soak up the light.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Robot vacuums often have four or more cliff sensors. A black rug can look like a cliff to some robots. Some owners block stairs with gates for extra safety. Never shine a flashlight at anyone's eyes.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, take the explorer task! Shine a flashlight onto a piece of white paper on the table, and see the bright spot. Now pull the paper away. The spot disappears. That sudden change is what the cliff sensor notices!
Outro
Cliff sensors keep vacuums from falling. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
