Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does a robot with a light sensor follow a flashlight?
The Big Idea
A robot with light sensors follows a flashlight by comparing left and right! It has one sensor on the left and one on the right. A simple rule makes it look like it is chasing the light.
Two Sensors
Step one: two sensors. A light-following robot has one light sensor on the left and one on the right. Each one reports how bright it is on its side, as a number.
The Rule
Step two: the rule. If the left sensor sees more light, the right wheel spins faster. That swings the robot to the left, toward the light.
Straight Ahead
Step three: straight ahead. When both sensors see equal light, both wheels spin the same. So the robot rolls straight toward the flashlight, until it reaches the light.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! The left sensor checks the left side. The right sensor checks the right side. Each wheel gets its own speed. And one small rule makes the robot seem to chase the light.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Simple rules can look clever. Moths and some bugs also move toward light, which is a simple rule too. Light-following robots are a classic first robot project. Never shine a flashlight at anyone's eyes.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, give it a go! Act it out: a friend shines a flashlight on the floor ahead, never at eyes. You pretend to be the robot. Turn left if they say left is brighter, and right if they say right. Can you reach the light?
