Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How does a robot sense heat?

The Big Idea

A robot can sense heat in two main ways! Some sensors change how easily electricity flows when they warm up. Others catch infrared light, which warm things give off.

Electric Change

Step one: electric change. Some heat sensors, called thermistors, change how easily electricity flows as they warm up. The robot measures this change and works out a temperature, in degrees.

Infrared Light

Step two: infrared light. Warm things give off infrared light, which our eyes cannot see. A sensor can catch it from a distance, without touching anything. This is handy for hot things.

Thermal Camera

Step three: a thermal camera. It uses infrared to make a picture of warm and cool things. Rescue robots can use one to find a warm person in the dark or behind smoke.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! A heat sensor can touch the object. Infrared lets it look from far away. A thermal camera shows warm places in bright colors. And the brain decides what the heat means, like too hot, or just right.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Infrared is a kind of light our eyes cannot see. Your TV remote uses infrared light too. Thermal cameras can see through darkness, but not through glass. Use only warm water, never hot, and ask a grown-up for help.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, your mission! Fill a mug with warm tap water, never hot. Hold the back of your hand near the mug, without touching it. Slowly move it closer and farther. Can you feel the heat? A sensor does this with numbers!
