Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How can a robot use a camera to find a ball?
The Big Idea
A robot can use a camera to find a ball by looking for patches of the ball's color! A camera takes a picture made of many tiny dots called pixels. Each pixel is stored as a number for its color.
Pixels
Step one: pixels. A camera picture is made of thousands or millions of tiny colored dots. The robot's computer stores each dot as numbers for red, green, and blue.
Find the Color
Step two: find the color. A program looks for a patch of orange pixels. Then it finds the middle of that patch, which is where the ball is.
Turn and Go
Step three: turn and go. If the patch is left of the picture's middle, the robot turns left. If it is centered, the robot drives straight ahead.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! Pixels make up the picture. A patch of the right color is the clue. The center of the patch shows where the ball is. And the camera needs good light to see true colors.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Computers do not see pictures the way we do. They see numbers. Some robots use smarter programs that learn shapes, not just colors. A red ball in the shade can look quite different from one in the sun. Play ball games in a safe, open area.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, be a detective! Draw a 10-by-10 grid on paper. Color some squares to make a ball. Then find the center square of the ball. This is how a robot finds the ball in the grid!
