Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why can a robot follow a black line on the floor?
The Big Idea
A robot can follow a black line because black soaks up light and white bounces it back! A sensor underneath shines a little light on the floor. It measures how much light comes back.
Shine and Measure
Step one: shine and measure. The line sensor sits under the robot and shines light on the floor. It measures how much light bounces back to a tiny light sensor.
Dark or Light
Step two: dark or light. White floors bounce back lots of light, and black lines soak it up. If the sensor sees dark, the robot knows it is on the line.
Correct Course
Step three: correct course. If the sensor sees light, the robot has wandered off, so it turns a bit to find the line again. It does this many times a second, so it wiggles along the path.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! A tiny light shines on the floor. A sensor measures what bounces back. A dark line sends back less light. Two sensors help the robot tell which way to turn.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Line followers are used in some warehouse robots. Shiny floors can confuse a line sensor. Many robot kits use line following as a first challenge. Draw with markers on paper only, not on walls or floors.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, try this! Draw a thick, curvy black line on white paper. A friend moves a small card along it and calls out dark or light. Can you steer using only those two words? Switch places and try again!
