Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do many robots look nothing like people?

The Big Idea

Robots are built to do a job, so their shapes copy their jobs! A floor cleaner is flat and round, a factory robot is an arm that reaches, and a rover has wheels. Engineers call this form follows function.

Pick a Job

Step one: start with the job. Cleaning floors, welding metal, and exploring a planet all need different robots. So engineers always ask what the robot has to do.

Match the Shape

Step two: match the shape. A flat body slides under a couch, an arm reaches into a box, and wheels roll over a dusty plain. Each shape does one job really well.

Save Resources

Step three: keep it simple. A human shape would be hard to build, and most jobs do not need legs or a face. A shape that fits the job saves energy, money, and space.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! A flat, round robot fits under furniture. An arm reaches and turns to lift things. A rover uses wheels to cross rough ground. And some robots are shaped like fish, because they swim.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Most robots in factories are arms bolted in place. Drones have propellers because their job is to fly. Robot shapes often copy animals that are good at a task. Draw with a grown-up nearby, and have fun.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Pick a job, like watering plants or sorting laundry. Draw a robot built for that job. Does it need legs, wheels, or arms? Does it need a face? Show your drawing to a friend, and ask what they would change!
