Why Is a Toaster Not a Robot but a Robot Vacuum Is?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why is a toaster not a robot but a robot vacuum is?

The Big Idea

A toaster does the same thing no matter what, but a robot vacuum looks around and chooses! A toaster follows a timer or a heat setting. A vacuum senses and decides, and that is what makes it a robot.

Toaster

Step one: the toaster. It heats up for a set time, and then it pops. It does not notice if the bread is thick or the room is cold, so it does not decide anything.

Vacuum Senses

Step two: the robot vacuum senses. Sensors tell it where walls, furniture legs, and drop-offs are. That information changes what the vacuum does next.

Vacuum Decides

Step three: the vacuum decides. Its program picks where to go next, like turning away from a table leg. It senses, decides, and moves, all by itself.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! A toaster only needs a timer. A vacuum has sensors for walls. It also has sensors for drop-offs, like stairs. And a program uses all that information to choose where to roll.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Some fancy toasters have sensors, but they still do not move around to do jobs. Robots usually sense, decide, and act on the world. A robot vacuum can map a room as it cleans. Never put anything but bread in a toaster, and ask a grown-up to help.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Make a chart with two columns, one for a toaster and one for a robot vacuum. Ask: what does it sense? What does it decide? Fill in as many boxes as you can. Which machine has more answers?

Sensing and deciding make a robot. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
