Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why can younger people hear some sounds that adults can't?

The Big Idea

Younger people can hear some high sounds that adults can't! Babies and young people can hear higher pitches than most adults. This is a normal part of getting older.

High Pitches

Step one: high pitches. Pitch is measured in hertz, and higher numbers mean higher sounds. Many kids hear up to about 20,000 hertz.

Hair Cells Wear

Step two: hair cells wear. Over many years, the hair cells that sense high sounds wear out first. So the top of our hearing range slowly gets lower.

Adult Ears

Step three: adult ears. Adults often top out nearer 15,000 hertz or lower. Hearing high sounds is not about being smarter, just younger.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Many kids hear very high pitches. Adults often hear a lower top pitch. The hair cells for high sounds wear out first. Low and middle sounds usually stay easy to hear. It is all a normal part of life, and nothing to worry about.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Quick facts about hearing range. Kids hear up to about 20,000 hertz. Dogs hear even higher than people do. Everyone's hearing changes with age. Protect your ears so they last.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Ask family members of different ages which everyday beeps and chirps they can hear. Try a microwave beep, a smoke-alarm chirp, or a phone tone. Who hears the highest ones? Make a chart! Share what you discover with a grown-up.

Outro

Young ears can hear some of the highest sounds, and that is perfectly normal for everyone as they grow up. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
