Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does sand make patterns on a vibrating plate?

The Big Idea

Sand makes patterns on a vibrating plate because some parts shake and some parts stay still! The sand bounces away from the shaking parts. It ends up on the still lines, and draws beautiful patterns.

A Vibrating Plate

Step one: a vibrating plate. When a metal plate vibrates, some parts shake a lot while other parts stay almost still. The still lines are called nodes.

Sand Moves

Step two: sand moves. Grains of sand on the plate are bounced away from the shaking parts. They end up resting on the still lines.

Pretty Patterns

Step three: pretty patterns. Different notes make the plate shake in different ways, so each note draws a different pattern. They are called Chladni patterns.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! First, a note makes the plate vibrate. Some parts shake, and some stay still. The sand hops away from the shaking parts. It settles on the still lines in a pattern. A higher note makes a fancier pattern.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Quick facts about sound patterns. A scientist named Ernst Chladni made them famous over 200 years ago. Scientists use the same idea to study how objects vibrate. Violin makers use it to test their instruments. Ask your teacher to show you.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Ask a teacher or a science center if you can see a Chladni plate. Meanwhile, draw the pattern you expect. Where do you think the sand will collect: at the shaking parts, or on the still lines? Share what you discover with a grown-up.

Sand shows us where sound is still. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
