Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why can't you hear an echo in a small room?
The Big Idea
You cannot hear a clear echo in a small room because the walls are so close! The echo comes back almost at once and blends with your voice. Your ears cannot separate it, so the sound just seems fuller.
Walls Are Close
Step one: walls are close. In a small room, sound only has to travel a few meters to a wall and back. That trip is over in a flash.
Too Quick
Step two: too quick. Your ears can only hear an echo as separate if it arrives at least a tenth of a second after the original sound. In a small room, it arrives sooner.
The 17 Meter Rule
Step three: the 17 meter rule. Sound goes about 343 meters a second, so in a tenth of a second it can go there and back to a wall about 17 meters away. Closer than that, and the echo blends in.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! First, you speak in a small room. The wall is only a few steps away. The echo returns almost instantly. It blends in and makes the sound fuller. That tenth of a second is the key.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Quick facts about small rooms. A tenth of a second is the magic gap. Big halls and canyons are far enough away. Small rooms still bounce sound, but it blends in. Measure with a grown-up.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Use a tape measure to find how far you are from the wall across your bedroom. Remember sound goes 343 meters a second. How long would the echo take? Is that enough time to hear it separately? Share what you discover with a grown-up.

Echoes need space to be heard. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
