Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does a whip crack?

The Big Idea

A whip cracks because its tip moves faster than the speed of sound! A flick sends a loop racing down the whip. At the thin end, it makes a tiny sonic boom.

The Flick

Step one: the flick. A quick flick sends a loop of motion traveling down the whip. It looks like a wave running along a rope.

Speeding Up

Step two: the loop speeds up. The whip gets thinner and lighter toward the tip. The same energy moves less material, so the loop goes faster and faster.

Tiny Boom

Step three: the crack. At the end, the tip goes faster than the speed of sound, which is about 343 meters a second. That makes a tiny sonic boom, and the boom is the crack you hear.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! It starts with a flick. A loop travels down the whip. The thin tip gets very fast. And the tip makes a crack.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! The crack is a small version of the boom from a jet. The loop makes the tip move faster than the hand that flicked it. Wave energy travels down a rope in a similar way. Real whips are tools for adults, so only play with soft rope.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, take the mission! Lay a long, soft rope on the floor, in an open space. Flick one end sideways and watch the wave run along to the far end. Does it look like it speeds up? Feel how your flick travels to the end.

Outro

A whip tip moves faster than sound, so it cracks, just like a tiny jet boom. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
