Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does sound travel fastest through solid metal?
The Big Idea
Sound travels fastest through solid metal because its atoms are held tightly together! They snap back very quickly after a push. So the vibration races from one atom to the next, like a row of dominoes.
Tight Atoms
Step one: tightly held atoms. In metal, the atoms are held firmly together, like beads linked by strong springs. When one is pushed, its neighbors feel it right away.
Snap Back Fast
Step two: they snap back. Metal is stiff, so its atoms snap back quickly after being pushed. That lets the vibration race from one atom to the next.
The Speed
Step three: the speed. Sound travels through steel at about 5,000 meters each second. That is more than 14 times faster than in air. A football field takes sound only a fiftieth of a second in steel.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! Air is the slowest of the three. Water is a lot faster. Steel is faster still. Stiff, light materials carry sound the fastest.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Stiff and light materials carry sound fastest. Engineers can find cracks in metal by sending sound through it. Tapping a pipe sends a signal far down its length. Never go near train tracks, and keep tapping gentle.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, try a quick experiment! Find a long metal railing or fence outdoors, with a grown-up. Have a friend gently tap one end with a coin. Rest your ear lightly on the other end. Do you hear two taps? Which comes first?
Outro
Stiff metal passes sound along at top speed, much faster than air. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
