Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do squeaky doors and sneakers squeak?

The Big Idea

Squeaks come from something called stick-slip! Two surfaces rub together, stick for a moment, and then slip free. This happens over and over, super fast, and that makes the squeak.

Surfaces Stick

Step one: they stick. When two surfaces rub, tiny bumps on each one can catch on the other. For a moment, the surfaces grab and hold. Think of dragging a rubber shoe across a smooth floor.

Then They Slip

Step two: they slip. As you keep pushing, the force builds up until the surfaces suddenly slip free. Then they catch again, and slip again. It is a tiny bump-bump-bump, too fast to feel.

Shaking Squeak

Step three: the squeak. This stick and slip can happen hundreds or thousands of times each second. That quick shaking pushes on the air and makes the squeaking sound. A faster rub gives a higher squeak.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! A door hinge squeaks when metal sticks and slips. A sneaker squeaks on a smooth gym floor. A drop of oil makes surfaces slide smoothly. Then the squeak goes away, and the door glides quietly.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! A violin bow makes music in a similar stick-slip way. Faster rubbing changes the pitch of a squeak. Oil and grease let surfaces glide instead of grab. Ask a grown-up to oil hinges, because oil can be messy and slippery.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, take the challenge! Slowly drag a damp fingertip across a clean window and listen for a squeak. Change your speed and listen again. Ask a grown-up to oil a squeaky hinge. Does the squeak go away?

Outro

A squeak is surfaces sticking and slipping very fast. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
