Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do ice cubes crackle in a drink?
The Big Idea
Ice cubes crackle because the ice gets stressed when it warms up quickly! The outside swells while the inside stays cold. The ice cracks and tiny air bubbles pop out.
Warm Outside
Step one: the outside warms. When you drop ice into a warm drink, the outside of the cube warms up very quickly. The middle of the cube is still very cold, so the two parts do not match.
Ice Cracks
Step two: the ice cracks. The warmer outside swells, but the cold inside does not, so the ice is stressed. Little cracks open up, and each one makes a crackling sound.
Air Escapes
Step three: trapped air escapes. Ice also has tiny air bubbles trapped inside. When the ice melts or cracks, they escape with little pops. Together, the cracks and pops make the crackling sound.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! The ice starts out very cold. The drink around it is warmer. The change makes tiny cracks. And trapped air bubbles pop out.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Cloudy ice has more air bubbles than clear ice. Lake ice can crack for the same reason, in a much bigger way. Ice cubes that have sat out for a while crackle less. Please use ice carefully, and ask a grown-up to help.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, give it a go! Drop an ice cube into a glass of room-temperature water and listen closely. Then try a cube that has been sitting out for a few minutes. Which one crackles more? Why do you think that is?
Outro
Ice crackles when quick warming cracks it and sets tiny air bubbles free. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
