Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does Velcro make a ripping sound?

The Big Idea

Velcro rips because thousands of tiny hooks let go of loops one after another! Each little release makes a tiny snap. Thousands of snaps close together blend into a ripping sound.

Hooks and Loops

Step one: hooks and loops. One side of Velcro has thousands of tiny hooks, and the other side is covered in soft loops. When you press them together, the hooks catch the loops and hold on.

Tiny Snaps

Step two: tiny snaps. When you pull the sides apart, each hook lets go of its loop suddenly. Every release makes a tiny snap that is much too small to hear alone.

A Ripping Sound

Step three: they blend together. Thousands of snaps happen so close together that they sound like one ripping noise. Pulling faster makes the snaps come faster, so the sound is higher and louder.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! One side is covered in tiny hooks. The other side is covered in soft loops. Each hook lets go with a little snap. All the snaps together make a rip.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! The inventor got the idea from burrs sticking to his dog's fur. He studied the burrs and saw tiny hooks catching on loops. Velcro is used on shoes, jackets, and even in space. Tear it apart gently, and keep your ears away from loud rips.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like an explorer! Peel a piece of Velcro apart slowly, and then quickly. How does the sound change? Look at both sides with a magnifying glass. Can you spot the hooks and the loops?
