Why Does Snapping Your Fingers Make a Snap?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does snapping your fingers make a snap?

The Big Idea

A finger snap is a fast, tiny slam that makes a crisp sound! Your middle finger slips off your thumb and hits the base of your thumb. That hit makes the snap. It happens so fast that your eyes cannot follow it.

Press Together

Step one: press together. First, you press your thumb and middle finger together hard. That stores up energy, like a squished spring. Friction holds the fingers tight until they let go.

The Slip

Step two: the slip. Your middle finger slips off the thumb and swings toward your palm. It slams into the base of your thumb, and that hit makes the snap sound.

Very Fast

Step three: it is super fast. Scientists measured a snap and found it can happen in less than a hundredth of a second. That makes it one of the fastest movements the human body can make.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! First, press your fingers together. Then the middle finger slips away. It slams into the base of the thumb. And that quick hit makes a snap sound.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! A snap is faster than the blink of an eye. Dry fingers grip well, so the snap is crisp. Wet or oily fingers slip too early, so the snap is dull. Washing your hands after the soap test is a good idea.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, take the challenge! Try snapping with dry fingers. Then try again with a little soap on them. Does the snap sound the same? Where do you think the sound comes from?
