Why Does Fresh Snow Make Everything Sound So Quiet?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does fresh snow make everything sound so quiet?

The Big Idea

Fresh snow makes everything sound quiet because it soaks up sound! It is full of tiny air pockets between the flakes. Sound waves get lost in those pockets instead of bouncing back.

Air Pockets

Step one: air pockets. Fresh snow is soft and fluffy, with lots of tiny air spaces between the flakes. It looks solid, but it is mostly air, which is also why snow is such a good blanket.

Sound Gets Trapped

Step two: sound gets trapped. Sound waves go into the pockets and rub against the ice crystals. The wave loses its energy, so it does not bounce back to your ears.

No Echoes

Step three: no echoes. With fewer echoes and less sound bouncing around, the world feels hushed. Hard, icy snow reflects more sound, so a crusty snowy field can sound much louder than a fluffy one.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Fresh snow piles up in soft, fluffy layers. Tiny air pockets sit between the flakes. Sound waves go in and fade away. That leaves a peaceful, quiet world after a new snowfall.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Many soft, fluffy things soak up sound. Foam, blankets, and cotton do the same job. Recording studios use foam to stop echoes. Dress warmly and play in snow with a grown-up.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, lab challenge! Drop a marble from a low height onto a bare table. Then drop it onto a thick folded towel. Which makes a quieter sound? Why does the soft surface help? Share what you discover with a grown-up.
