What Do Decibels Measure?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. What do decibels measure?

The Big Idea

Decibels measure how strong a sound is! We write the unit as dB. The bigger the number, the more powerful the sound, so a high dB number means a loud sound.

A Loudness Ruler

Step one: a loudness ruler. A decibel, written dB, is a unit for how strong a sound is. The quietest sounds we can hear are close to 0 dB.

Everyday Sounds

Step two: everyday sounds. A whisper is around 30 dB, and normal talking is around 60 dB. A lawn mower is around 90 dB.

Protect Your Ears

Step three: protect your ears. Sounds above about 85 dB can hurt your hearing if you listen for a long time. Ear protection helps around loud machines, and a grown-up can help you choose.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! A whisper is very soft, around 30 dB, like leaves rustling. Normal talking is about 60 dB. A lawn mower is loud, about 90 dB, and you should not stand next to one for long. That is why people wear ear protection near loud machines.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! The quietest sounds we can hear are close to 0 dB. A sound meter app on a phone can estimate decibels, though it is not perfect. Every 10 dB is a big jump in sound power. Keep headphones low, and ask a grown-up to check.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, give it a go! Make a loudness chart with a long line from 0 to 140. Mark where a whisper, a fridge hum, talking, a vacuum cleaner, and a siren would go. Ask a grown-up to check your guesses. Share what you discover with a grown-up.
