Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does a bottle hum when you blow across the top?

The Big Idea

A bottle hums when you blow across the top because the air inside starts to vibrate! Your breath makes the air in the bottle bounce back and forth. That steady bounce is the hum you hear.

Blow Across

Step one: blow across the top. Your stream of air flows over the opening and skips past the edge. That gives the air inside the bottle little taps, over and over.

Air Bounces

Step two: the air bounces. The air inside the bottle bounces back and forth, like a spring. It vibrates at a steady pitch, and the bottle hums. Scientists call this resonance.

Size Matters

Step three: size matters. A bigger bottle holds more air and hums lower. A smaller bottle holds less air and hums higher. Try a tall bottle and a short bottle, and listen for the difference.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! First, blow across the top of the bottle. The air inside starts to shake. It hums at one steady pitch. Bigger bottles hum lower than small ones.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! The humming air inside works like a flute. A flute player blows across a hole in the same way. Pan pipes are just tubes of different lengths. Blow gently, and take breaks to stay comfortable.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, challenge! Blow across the top of different empty bottles, with your lips close to the opening. Which bottle gives the lowest hum? Which gives the highest? Line them up from low to high. Share what you discover with a grown-up.

Air inside a bottle can sing. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
