Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why can a tin-can phone carry a voice?

The Big Idea

A tin-can phone carries a voice because the string carries the shaking! Your voice makes the bottom of the cup vibrate. The vibration runs along the string and shakes the other cup.

Voice Shakes Cup

Step one: your voice shakes the cup. When you speak into the cup, your voice makes sound waves in the air. Those waves make the bottom of the cup vibrate.

String Carries It

Step two: the string carries the shake. The tight string passes the vibration along as a wave. A string carries shaking much better than air does over that distance.

Far Cup Speaks

Step three: the other cup speaks. The string shakes the bottom of the other cup. That cup shakes the air near your friend's ear, and they hear your voice.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! You talk gently into your cup. The bottom of the cup shakes with your voice. The tight string carries the shaking across. The far cup shakes the air by your friend's ear.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! The string must stay tight for sound to pass. If the string touches something or goes slack, the sound fades out. Real telephones turn voices into electric signals instead. Talk quietly, never shout into a cup.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, quick experiment! With a grown-up, make a phone from two paper cups and a long string, tied through small holes. Pull the string tight and talk quietly. What happens if you let it go slack or pinch it? Share what you discover with a grown-up.
