Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does your throat tickle when you hum?
The Big Idea
Your throat tickles because tiny flaps inside it are fluttering super fast! Air from your lungs rushes past them, and they open and shut again and again. That flutter is a vibration, and your fingers feel it as a tickle.
Air Rushes Out
Step one: air rushes out. When you hum, air from your lungs flows up through your throat. Inside your voice box sit two small flaps called vocal folds.
Folds Flutter
Step two: the folds flutter. The moving air makes the folds open and shut hundreds of times each second. Each flutter puffs out a tiny pulse of air, and those pulses together make the hum you hear.
Pitch Changes
Step three: tight folds make higher notes. When the folds get tighter and thinner, they flutter faster. Faster fluttering means a higher pitch, like a singer reaching for a high note.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! Your lungs push a gentle stream of air up toward your throat. The two vocal folds flutter like tiny curtains. Your fingertips feel that flutter as a tickle. And out comes your hum!
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Your vocal folds are inside your voice box. A low hum comes from slower flutters. When you whisper, the folds do not flutter, so there is no buzz. Hum gently and never strain your voice.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Put your fingertips lightly on your throat and hum a low note, then a high note. Feel how the buzz changes. Now whisper, and see if the buzzing stops! Share what you discover with a grown-up.
