Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why are special eclipse glasses safe when ordinary sunglasses are not?
The Big Idea
Special eclipse glasses are safe because they block almost all of the Sun's light! Ordinary sunglasses, even very dark ones, let in far too much. Safety first, then science!
A Safety Standard
Step one: a safety standard. Eclipse glasses must meet a special safety standard called ISO 12312-2. Only glasses with that mark are made for watching an eclipse.
Strong Filters
Step two: strong filters. Their filters block almost all of the Sun's light, even the harmful kinds we cannot see. Ordinary sunglasses still let in far too much light and can hurt your eyes.
Stay Careful
Step three: stay careful. Never use scratched glasses, or look through cameras or binoculars without special filters. The Sun can damage eyes even when it is partly covered.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! Look for the ISO 12312-2 mark. Check that the lenses have no scratches. Ordinary sunglasses are not safe for this. Always ask a grown-up to check.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! The Sun is bright enough to damage eyes even when it is partly covered. Damage can happen without any pain. A pinhole viewer lets you see the Sun's picture without looking at the Sun. Always follow a grown-up's lead.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Ask a grown-up to check that any eclipse glasses have the ISO 12312-2 mark and no scratches. Never look at the Sun with anything else. A grown-up can help you make a pinhole viewer from a card. Look only at the picture on the ground, with your back to the Sun.
