Why Do Drivers Switch Off Their High Beams for Oncoming Cars?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do drivers switch off their high beams for oncoming cars?

The Big Idea

Drivers switch off their high beams for oncoming cars because bright light dazzles other drivers! High beams shine far down dark roads. But they make it hard for others to see.

High Beams

Step one: high beams. High beams shine far down the road, which is helpful on dark country roads. They show animals, signs, and bends in the road much sooner.

Dazzled Eyes

Step two: glare. The strong light shines in other drivers' eyes. It makes it hard for them to see the road for a few seconds, and that can be dangerous.

Low Beams

Step three: switch to low beams. When another car is coming, drivers switch to low beams. It is a way of being polite and safe at the same time.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! High beams shine far ahead. They dazzle oncoming drivers. Low beams aim lower. Switching keeps everyone safe.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Some modern cars dim their high beams automatically. A small camera notices other headlights. Low beams aim downward and to the side, so the light does not shine in eyes. Pedestrians and bike riders benefit too, because drivers can see better.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Next time you ride in a car at night with a grown-up, watch the driver. See how they dim the lights when another car comes. Can you notice the glare when a car with bright lights goes by? Always buckle up and stay seated.
