Why Is It Easier to Read When a Lamp Shines on the Page?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why is it easier to read when a lamp shines on the page?

The Big Idea

It is easier to read when a lamp shines on the page because the page gets plenty of light! Your eyes work best when the words are bright and clear. But where the lamp sits matters a lot.

Light on the Page

Step one: light on the page. A lamp that shines on the page puts plenty of light right where you need it. Bright words are easier for your eyes to see.

Shadows

Step two: shadows. If the light comes from behind your head, your head makes a shadow on the page. Your hand can block the light too.

Glare

Step three: glare. If the lamp shines in your eyes, it creates glare that makes reading hard. A good reading light comes from the side or from above.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Light the page so the words are bright. Do not let your own shadow fall on it. Do not let the lamp glare in your eyes. Light from the side or above works best.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Right-handed readers often put the lamp on the left to avoid shadows. Left-handed readers often put it on the right. Reading in dim light does not hurt your eyes, but it can make them tired. Take breaks and look into the distance now and then.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Read a page in a dim room. Move a lamp to different spots: behind you, beside you, and in front of you. Which spot makes the words easiest to read, and why? Ask a grown-up to help with the lamp.

Outro

A lamp shining on the page helps you read, if it avoids shadows and glare. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
