Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do some screens go dark when you tilt polarized glasses?
The Big Idea
Polarized lenses only let through light that wiggles in one direction! Many screens already give off light that wiggles one way. If the glasses block that direction, the screen looks black.
Wiggling Light
Step one: wiggling light. Light travels in waves that can wiggle up and down, sideways, or anything in between. Most lamp light wiggles in all directions at once, so it is not polarized.
One-Way Filter
Step two: the filter. Polarized lenses only let through light that wiggles one way. They block the light that wiggles the other way, like a fence with only up-and-down gaps.
Screens Go Dark
Step three: a dark screen. Many screens give off light that already wiggles in one direction. If your lenses block that direction, the screen looks black, and turning the glasses brings the picture back.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! Normal light wiggles every which way. Polarized lenses pass only one direction. A screen's light often wiggles one way. Turn the glasses and the picture returns.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Polarized lenses also cut glare from shiny surfaces like water. Anglers and drivers like them for that reason, because water and roads sparkle less. Glare is light that bounces off a shiny surface mostly wiggling in one direction. Never look at the Sun, even through polarized glasses.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up's permission, look at a calculator or a monitor through polarized sunglasses. Slowly tilt your head sideways, or rotate the glasses. At what angle does the screen go dark? Remember, never look at the Sun, even through sunglasses.
Outro
Polarized lenses filter light by its wiggle direction, which can make screens go dark. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
