Why Do Streetlights Switch on by Themselves at Dusk?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do streetlights switch on by themselves at dusk?

The Big Idea

A streetlight switches on by itself because it has a small light sensor! In daylight, the sensor keeps the lamp off. When it gets dark, the lamp turns on. It is like a night-time helper that never forgets.

Light Sensor

Step one: the sensor. A streetlight has a small light sensor on top. It notices how bright the sky is, a little like a tiny eye that never blinks.

Daytime Off

Step two: daytime. In the daytime, light hits the sensor, and that keeps the lamp switched off. That saves energy, because nobody needs a streetlight in the sunshine.

Dusk On

Step three: dusk. When it gets dark, the sensor sends a different signal. The lamp switches on, and no one has to flip a switch.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! The sensor sits on top. Daylight keeps the lamp off. Darkness sends a new signal, and the sensor says, time to shine! Then the lamp shines on the street.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Solar garden lights use the same idea. They turn on when the Sun goes down. Streetlights help drivers, bikers, and walkers see at night and stay safe. At sunrise, the same sensor switches them off again.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! In the daytime, find a solar garden light with a grown-up. Look for the small solar panel on top. Cover its solar panel with a paper cup. Does the light turn on after a minute? Take the cup off and watch it switch off.

Outro

Streetlights have light sensors, so they switch on at dusk all by themselves. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
