Why Does a Laser Pointer Make a Tiny Dot Instead of a Wide Beam?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does a laser pointer make a tiny dot instead of a wide beam?

The Big Idea

A laser pointer makes a tiny dot because its light is very organized! All of it is one color, and it travels together in the same direction. A flashlight's light spreads out in a wide cone.

Mixed Light

Step one: a flashlight. Its light is a mix of colors, heading in many directions. So the beam spreads into a wide cone.

Team Light

Step two: laser light. Every wave is the same color, and the waves travel in step, side by side. Light that moves like a team has no reason to spread out.

Tiny Dot

Step three: a tiny dot. The narrow beam lands on a wall as one small, bright spot. All that light is squeezed into one place, so lasers need great care.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! A flashlight makes a wide cone of light. Its light is a mix of many colors. A laser is one color, traveling together. So it lands as a tiny dot.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! A laser beam can stay narrow enough to reach the Moon and back. Scientists bounce lasers off mirrors left on the Moon. Even laser light spreads a tiny bit. Only a grown-up handles a laser.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up in charge, shine a flashlight at a wall. Then the grown-up shines the laser pointer at the same wall, from the same spot. Compare the wide circle with the tiny dot. The laser points only at the wall, never at anyone.

Outro

A laser makes a tiny dot because all its light travels together. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
