Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does glare make a shiny page hard to read?

The Big Idea

A glossy page acts like a mirror and bounces the lamp's light straight toward your eyes. That bright reflection, called glare, is stronger than the light from the ink. So the words become hard to see.

Glossy Page

Step one: a glossy page. A glossy page is coated with a smooth, shiny layer, so it feels slick. That layer acts like a weak mirror.

Glare Appears

Step two: glare appears. When the page is tilted just right, the lamp's light bounces straight to your eyes. That bright bounce, called glare, drowns out the dark ink.

Fix It

Step three: fix it. Tilt the page, or move the lamp to one side. The glare bounces away from your eyes, and the words become clear again.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! The lamp sends light down. The glossy page bounces it to your eyes. The glare hides the dark ink. Matte paper scatters light, so there is less glare.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Matte paper scatters light so it has less glare. Many books are printed on matte paper, so they are easy to read under any light. Put a lamp beside you, not behind the page you read. Take reading breaks to rest your eyes, and look at faraway things sometimes.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Read a glossy magazine page under a lamp. Tilt the page until you see glare, then tilt it back until the words are clear. Try moving the lamp to one side. Never look straight at a bright light.

Outro

Glossy pages bounce light, and that glare hides words. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
