Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why are some things shiny and others dull?
The Big Idea
Smooth surfaces reflect light in one direction, so you see a bright, glossy shine. Rough surfaces scatter light in all directions, so they look dull or matte. A polished shoe is shiny, and a cotton ball is dull.
Smooth Surface
Step one: a smooth surface. On a smooth surface, light rays bounce off in the same direction. If that direction lands in your eye, you see a bright, glossy shine.
Rough Surface
Step two: a rough surface. A cotton ball has thousands of fuzzy fibers that bounce light every which way. No spot looks extra bright, so it looks dull, or matte.
Scratches Matter
Step three: scratches matter. Even a smooth surface looks dull when it is covered in tiny scratches. That is why old scratched sunglasses look foggy.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! A polished shoe is very shiny. A smooth plastic cup is pretty shiny. A sandy rock is dull, because its grains scatter the light. And a cotton ball is the dullest of all.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Shiny is called glossy, and dull is called matte. Photo printers offer both glossy and matte paper, so you can choose. Smooth things usually feel smooth when you touch them. Look under a lamp, never the Sun.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Compare a glossy sheet of paper, a matte sheet, a smooth plastic cup, and a sandy rock under a lamp. Sort them from shiniest to dullest. Which ones are smoothest to touch? Never look straight at a bright lamp.
