Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does a kaleidoscope make endless patterns?

The Big Idea

A kaleidoscope has two or three mirrors set at an angle inside a tube. Bits of colored glass tumble at one end, and the mirrors reflect them again and again. Your eye sees a wheel of repeating patterns that change whenever you turn the tube.

Tumbling Beads

Step one: tumbling beads. A few pieces of colored glass or beads sit loose at one end. When you turn the tube, they tumble into a new arrangement.

Angled Mirrors

Step two: angled mirrors. The mirrors meet at an angle, so each one reflects the beads, and also the other mirror's reflection. Soon one small pile of beads becomes a whole circle of copies.

Turn the Tube

Step three: turn the tube. The pieces shift and fall, and the pattern changes completely, just like that. Your eye sees a wheel that is almost never the same twice.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! The tumbling beads supply the colors. The mirrors copy them over and over. You see a repeating wheel of patterns. Turn the tube, and the pattern changes.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! The name comes from Greek words meaning beautiful form to see. More mirror angles make more copies. Light from a bright window or lamp makes the colors glow. Never point a kaleidoscope at the Sun.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, make a kaleidoscope by taping three small plastic mirrors in a triangle inside a cardboard tube. Put a few colorful beads at one end. Turn it slowly and watch the patterns. Look toward a lamp, never the Sun.

Outro

Mirrors that repeat colorful bits make endless patterns. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
