Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do things look bigger and closer underwater?

The Big Idea

Light bends when it goes from water to air. A diving mask keeps a pocket of air in front of your eyes, so light bends as it enters the mask. That makes things look about one-third closer and bigger than they really are.

Water to Air

Step one: water to air. Light from a fish travels through water and then enters the air in your mask. At that edge between water and air, the light bends.

Brain Guess

Step two: the brain guess. Your brain thinks the light came in a straight line. So it pictures the fish bigger and closer than it is.

Closer Look

Step three: a closer look. Everything underwater looks about one-third closer. It also looks bigger, which can make grabbing something underwater tricky at first.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! A diving mask holds air in front of your eyes. The air pocket is where the light bends before it reaches you. A fish seems closer and larger. Your brain gets fooled by the bend.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Without a mask, underwater things look blurry. That is because eyes are made to focus in air, not water. From above, a fish in water looks nearer the surface than it is. Swim only with a grown-up watching.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Look at a toy through the side of a clear plastic tub filled with water. Then compare it with the same toy outside the tub. Does it look bigger? Is it where you expected?

Outro

Water bends light, so things look bigger and closer. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
