Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why can some windows look like mirrors from the outside in the daytime?

The Big Idea

Mirror-like windows have a thin metal coating that reflects some light and lets some through. Outside on a bright day, the reflection of the sky is brighter than the dim light coming from inside. So the window looks like a mirror from outside.

Thin Coating

Step one: a thin coating. The glass has a metal layer that is much thinner than a hair. It bounces some light back and lets the rest of the light through.

Bright Outside

Step two: bright outside. On a sunny day, lots of bright light bounces off the coating. That reflection is stronger than the dim light from inside, so it looks like a mirror.

Dim Inside

Step three: dim inside. From the darker inside, the bright outdoors shines through the glass. So people inside can see out clearly.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! The outside is much brighter than the inside. The coating reflects some of that light. From outside, you see a mirror. At night with the lights on, the effect flips.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! The brighter side decides which way the window works. At night, people outside can see in when the lights are on. Curtains help when you want privacy at night. Never look at the Sun's reflection in glass.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! On a sunny day, look at a mirrored office window from outside. Notice your reflection. If you get a chance, compare how it looks from inside. Which side seems more mirror-like?

The brighter side of a coated window looks like a mirror. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
