Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do some lenses make things look smaller?
The Big Idea
A lens that is thinner in the middle than at the edges spreads light out. That makes things look smaller. It also lets you see a much wider scene.
Thin in the Middle
Step one: thin in the middle. Most magnifiers are thick in the middle, and they make things look bigger. Some lenses are the opposite, thin in the middle and thick at the edges. Scientists call them concave lenses.
Spreading Light
Step two: spreading light. Light that passes through this lens spreads apart instead of coming together. Your eye gathers it into a smaller, tidier picture of a wide scene.
Wide and Small
Step three: wide and small. Because the picture shrinks, much more of the scene fits into your view. Everything looks smaller, but you see a lot more, which is very handy for spotting a visitor.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! Eyeglasses for seeing far away use this kind of lens. A door peephole uses one too. It squeezes a whole hallway into a tiny circle. Everyone in the hallway looks small, even a tall grown-up.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! People who have trouble seeing far away are called nearsighted. Their glasses use lenses that are thin in the middle. A peephole shows a wide view from a small hole. Ask a grown-up before using a door peephole.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, look through a door's peephole from the inside. How much of the hallway can you see? How big do people look? Never open the door for a stranger.
