Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why can bees see patterns on flowers that we cannot?

The Big Idea

Bees and many other insects can see ultraviolet light, which humans cannot. Many flowers have patterns that only show up in ultraviolet. To a bee, a plain flower may carry a bright landing sign!

Invisible Light

Step one: ultraviolet is light we cannot see. It sits just beyond violet in the rainbow, and human eyes can not detect it. But bees can. Bees see ultraviolet, blue, and green, but they do not see red the way we do.

Hidden Patterns

Step two: flowers have hidden patterns. Many flowers have a dark bullseye in the middle that only shows in ultraviolet. It points to the nectar. Insects use these signs every day to find food.

Landing Sign

Step three: bees follow the signs. The pattern helps bees land in the right place and find nectar quickly. Special UV cameras can show us what bees see. Flowers want bees to visit, so they show the way.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! To us, the flower's petals look plain. To a bee, a hidden bullseye shows up. The bee sees ultraviolet light. The bullseye points to the nectar. A bee sees a very different flower than we do!

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Bees can see ultraviolet light. Many flowers have patterns only visible in ultraviolet. Special UV cameras can show us what bees see. Watch bees from a distance and never disturb them.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! On a sunny day, look closely at a flower. Sketch any stripes or rings you see. Then picture how a bee might see an extra ultraviolet pattern. Watch bees from a safe distance, and never disturb them.
