Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do magicians hang black cloth behind their tricks?

The Big Idea

Black velvet soaks up almost all the light that hits it. It reflects very little back to your eyes, so it looks like empty darkness. Things dressed in black in front of it seem to disappear!

Black Soaks Light

Step one: black velvet soaks up light. Almost all the light that hits it is absorbed. Very little reaches your eyes. Black velvet is extra good because its fuzzy surface traps light.

Looks Empty

Step two: it looks like a hole. No light means no detail. Your eyes see only darkness. A black backdrop looks like empty space. Magicians choose very dark black cloth to keep tricks hidden.

Vanishing Tricks

Step three: black things blend in. A helper dressed in black in front of the backdrop is almost invisible. Stage crews wear black for the same reason. It feels like magic! The same trick helps photographers hide backgrounds.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Black velvet soaks up nearly all light. A black toy against it nearly vanishes. A toy on white paper is easy to see. Photos help you compare. Your eyes do not notice a black object against a black background.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Black velvet reflects almost no light. Your eyes cannot see an object if no light comes from it. Stage crews wear black so they blend into the dark. Never stare at bright stage lights.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Put a small toy on a sheet of white paper. Put another on black cloth. Take a photo of each. Which toy is easier to see?

Outro

Black cloth soaks up light, so it looks like empty darkness for magic tricks. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
