Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does wet sand look darker than dry sand?

The Big Idea

Dry sand scatters light off every grain, so it looks pale. Wet sand has a thin film of water around each grain. More light slips inside, where it gets absorbed, so the sand looks darker! Let's find out why.

Dry Sand

Step one: dry sand scatters light. Light bounces off the many grains and back to your eyes. So the sand looks pale.

Wet Sand

Step two: wet sand has a watery film. Each grain is coated with a thin layer of water, and more light slips inside instead of bouncing right back. The light gets absorbed.

Darker Look

Step three: less light reaches you. Less light returns to your eyes, so the wet sand looks darker. Wet pavement, soil, and fabric look darker for the same reason. This is also why a wet shirt looks darker.

A Closer Look

Let's compare! Dry sand bounces lots of light. Water makes a thin film around each grain. Wet sand lets light slip inside. A wet paper towel does the same thing. Water changes the way sand handles light.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Dry sand scatters more light than wet sand. Wet pavement, soil, and fabric look darker too. Water in the film lets more light slip in and get absorbed. Be careful near water, and stay with a grown-up at the beach.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Wet one half of a brown paper towel with a damp sponge. Compare the wet part to the dry part. Which one looks darker? What happens as it dries?

Outro

Wet sand looks darker because less light bounces back to your eyes. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
