Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does the same gray look lighter or darker on different backgrounds?

The Big Idea

Your brain decides how light or dark something looks by comparing it with the things around it. A gray square looks lighter on a dark background and darker on a light one. It can be exactly the same gray! Let's test your eyes with a trick.

Compare

Step one: your brain compares. It does not measure brightness alone. It looks at how different something is from its neighbors. Differences matter most.

Dark Background

Step two: on dark, the gray looks lighter. Next to black, the gray square stands out as bright. Your brain thinks, this is lighter than its neighbors. The same thing happens in reverse on a bright page.

Light Background

Step three: on light, the same gray looks darker. Next to white, the gray square seems dull and dark. It is exactly the same gray, but looks different. Your brain is working hard behind the scenes.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! On a dark background, gray looks lighter. On a light background, gray looks darker. It is the very same gray square. Your brain was fooled, which is why optical illusions work.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Your eyes measure differences, not just brightness. Optical illusions use this trick. Artists use it too, to make colors seem to glow. Cut paper with care, and ask a grown-up for help.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Cut two identical gray squares from paper. Place one on white paper and one on black paper. Do they look the same? Then slide them side by side to check.

Outro

Your brain judges gray by comparing it to its surroundings. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
