Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do shadows disappear on cloudy days?

The Big Idea

Direct sunlight comes from one small, bright spot, so it makes sharp shadows. Clouds spread the sunlight across the whole sky. Then light arrives from every direction, and shadows fade away! Thin clouds only blur shadows a little.

One Bright Spot

Step one: the Sun is one bright spot. On a sunny day, the light comes from one direction, so your body blocks it and leaves a sharp shadow. It is like turning a single spotlight into a big soft glow. Everything that blocks it makes a dark, clear outline.

Spread by Clouds

Step two: clouds spread the light out. Cloud droplets scatter sunlight in every direction, so the whole sky glows. That soft glow is called diffuse light.

No One Direction

Step three: nothing is blocked. Light arrives from everywhere, so no one direction is blocked, and shadows fade away. Faint shadows may still appear right next to the object, though.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! The Sun is one small bright spot. Clouds scatter its light all around. The whole sky glows softly. Photographers love this gentle light for faces. Soft light means soft shadows, or none at all.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Sunny days make sharp shadows. Cloudy skies make light that comes from everywhere. Photographers love cloudy days for gentle light on faces. Never look straight at the Sun to check for shadows.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! On a cloudy day, hold a pencil above a white sheet of paper outdoors. Look for its shadow. Try again on a sunny day. What changed?
