Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why will new islands keep appearing sometimes?
The Big Idea
New islands keep appearing sometimes because undersea volcanoes can build up until they poke above the waves. It happens when a volcano erupts again and again. A brand new island starts as bare, hot rock.
Pile It Up
Step one: pile it up. When an undersea volcano erupts again and again, lava and ash pile up on the seafloor. Each eruption adds a new layer, and the cone slowly grows taller until it breaks the surface.
Break the Surface
Step two: break the surface. In 1963, a new island called Surtsey appeared off Iceland. In 2015, another new island formed near Tonga.
Life Arrives
Step three: life arrives. Seeds can float on the sea, blow on the wind, or arrive in bird feathers. Plants and animals begin to settle on a new island within months or years.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! A cone grows on the seafloor. Steam and ash burst out of the sea. A bare island rises above the waves. Then the first plants arrive. A whole new home begins, with every plant a pioneer.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Surtsey is now a protected science site, visited only by researchers. New islands can also wear away in the waves. Hot lava cools quickly when it touches seawater. Never visit a new island that is still erupting.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Invent a new island and name it. Draw it with a volcano, a beach, and the first plants and birds. How would seeds get to a faraway island? Share your island story with someone.

New islands begin as bare rock and become new homes. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
