What Can Volcanic Rock Be Used for in Everyday Life?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. What can volcanic rock be used for in everyday life?

The Big Idea

Volcanic rock is useful in everyday life. Volcanoes leave useful gifts behind. People have used them for thousands of years, in homes, gardens, and cities.

Smooth and Strong

Step one: smooth and strong. Pumice is a light, bubbly rock that smooths and polishes surfaces, and some people use it on rough skin. Crushed basalt makes strong gravel for roads and railways.

Building

Step two: building. Ash mixed into concrete has been used since Roman times. Some old Roman buildings made with it are still standing today, after almost 2,000 years.

Garden and Tools

Step three: gardens and tools. Light rock called scoria is used in landscaping, and puffed volcanic glass called perlite is added to potting soil. Obsidian can be shaped into very sharp blades, so it must be handled by experts.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Pumice polishes and smooths. Basalt makes strong road gravel, and even paving stones. Perlite keeps garden soil light and airy. And ash in concrete has lasted for ages. Volcanoes help build our world, long after their eruptions end.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Pumice is so light it floats on water. Perlite pops like popcorn when it is heated. Obsidian makes the sharpest edges of any natural material. Never handle sharp rocks without a grown-up.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Look at a bag of potting soil, with a grown-up. The little white puffy bits are often perlite. Feel how light they are. List three other things at home that might be made of volcanic rock.
