Why Do Ships Care About Underwater Volcanoes?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do ships care about underwater volcanoes?

The Big Idea

Ships care about underwater volcanoes because they can erupt without any warning at the surface. They can make floating rafts of rock, shallow new islands, and sudden bursts of steam. Sailors use charts and warnings to steer clear.

Hidden Eruptions

Step one: hidden eruptions. An underwater volcano can erupt below the waves, where nobody can see it. Sometimes the first sign at the surface is bubbling water or steam.

Pumice Rafts

Step two: pumice rafts. Pumice is a light volcanic rock full of bubbles, and it floats. Huge rafts of it can clog ship engines, and in 2021 a giant raft drifted across the Pacific Ocean.

New Shallows

Step three: new shallows. Eruptions can build shallow new islands where the sea used to be deep, and make sudden bursts of steam. Scientists track them with underwater microphones and satellites, and sailors read the warnings.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! A volcano erupts under the sea. Pumice floats up and spreads out. Sometimes a new island builds. Warnings tell ships where to go around. Sailors can steer clear.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Pumice floats because it is full of tiny bubbles. In 2021, a huge pumice raft drifted across the Pacific. Underwater microphones can hear sea eruptions. Charts are updated when the seafloor changes.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Sprinkle puffed cereal on the water in a tub. Push a toy boat through it. Is it harder to move? That is a mini pumice raft. How might sailors avoid one?
