How Do Scientists Study a Volcano’s Crater Lake or Glacier?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How do scientists study a volcano’s crater lake or glacier?

The Big Idea

Many volcanoes have lakes in their craters or glaciers on their slopes, and both can be hazards. Scientists study them to learn about heat and water. A volcano's lake can act like a thermometer.

Test the Lake

Step one: test the lake. Scientists measure the lake's temperature, its color, and its chemistry. A sudden warm-up or color change can show that new heat is rising from below.

See Through Ice

Step two: look through the ice. Radar can see through ice to map what is under a glacier. That shows where the ice is thick, and where water might flow.

Spot Hazards

Step three: spot the hazards. Hot rock can melt ice quickly, and meltwater can make floods and mudflows. In British Columbia, Mount Meager is a glacier-covered volcano that scientists study.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! A crater lake can change color or chemistry. A glacier holds lots of ice on a slope. Thermometers check for warming. Radar looks through the ice. Together, these clues keep towns informed.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Some crater lakes are turquoise, green, or even red. Glaciers hold a lot of frozen water. A volcano can melt ice faster than the sun. Never go near a volcano lake without a guide.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Put an ice cube in a glass of cold water and another in warm water. With a grown-up, make sure the warm water is not hot. Time how long each takes to melt. Why would melting ice be a worry on a hot volcano?
