Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why are hazard maps colorful?

The Big Idea

Hazard maps are colorful because colors show, at a glance, what could happen where. Each color is a zone, and each zone has its own level of danger. People use the maps to plan roads, homes, and escape routes.

Make Zones

Step one: make zones. Scientists divide the land around a volcano into areas, using what they know about past eruptions. They think about lava flows, falling ash, hot gas clouds, and mudflows.

Pick Colors

Step two: pick the colors. Red usually means the highest danger, and yellow or green means lower danger. Colors are quick to read, even for people in a hurry.

Make Plans

Step three: make plans. Towns use the map to decide where to build homes and schools, and where to place escape routes. In Canada, scientists have made hazard maps for Mount Meager in British Columbia.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Red zones are closest and most dangerous. Orange zones still need care. Yellow zones have some risk. Green zones have the lowest risk. River valleys can be special danger zones, since mudflows follow them.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Hazard maps use clues from old lava and ash layers. The maps can change when scientists learn new things. Valleys are often shaded as a special zone. Learn your own local map with a grown-up.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Draw a volcano on paper and shade rings around it. Color the closest ring red, then orange, yellow, and green. Add a river valley as a special danger zone. Where would you build a school?
